JR Pass necessary? 2008/9/8 00:30
If to travel within Tokyo and to Tokyo side trip like Hakone, Nikko, Disneyland, Odaiba in 7 days, is it worth it to buy a 7 days JR pass? Or it is better to buy the train tickets individualy. Which way is cheaper? Please Help.. Thanks

Audrey,
definitely get individual tickets. Some rail companies offer good deals to Hakone and Nikko. See http://www.japan-guide.com/e/e2357.html for all the details. For all those other little trips that you will do I suggest a SUICA card http://www.jreast.co.jp/e/suica/index.html
It will save you a lot of time and effort purchasing tickets. If you are arriving at Narita you can get a SUICA + NEX card which is a great saving on the regular fare.

Audrey: JR passes (7, 14, 21 days)are meant for long distance travel, NOT for travel within one city. If you use them for that purpose they are not expensive at all as a 7 days pass, for example, cost the same as a return trip from Tokyo to Kyoto and during these 7 days all the other trips you make (for example, in that case of a trip to Kyoto, to Nara,Kobe, Himeji and also around Osaka)are free. Each region and major town has LOCAL passes that are also economical, depending on your itinerary. That said, if you only visit 2 or 3 districts in a day in Tokyo or Osaka, for example, single tickets are cheaper.
