HI,
I'm thinking about coming to Japan to work for 6-12months.
But I was thinking about travelling the first week. Would I be allowed use a JR railpass?

You can only obtain a railpass if you have a "Temporary Visitor" visa in your passport. If you plan to come on a temporary visitor (i.e. tourist) visa and change to a working visa later after finding work, then there will be no problem.
