self drive in japan for 2 weeks 2008/9/13 02:02
family of 7 thinking touring 2 weeks in Central Honshu, including tokyo, mount fuji, osaka, kyoto, nikko, nara, yokohama, fujisawa. Considering self- drive option due to easier group management. Can anyone advise if it is a wise and cost effective option? Of course, when in Tokyo, will use the Metro Subway. Tks

It might be cost effective, but it is not time effective. Large distances like Tokyo-Kyoto take twice as long or longer by car than by shinkansen.

Also, getting around central metropolitan areas, such as central Tokyo, Osaka and Kyoto is easier by public transportation or taxis, due to navigation and parking issues.
