I get confilicting advice-some poeple tell me to use a credit card for hotels or department store purchases-others tell me to use Japanese Yen. With the dolooar so weak to the Yen in 2008 I want to make a smart choice.

You mean cash or credit?
When you use your credit card its charged in yen, then automatically converted by to your home countries currency (USD).
If you bring cash you still have to do currency conversion as well.
Sometimes the card gives better exchange rate, but depends on the card how much they charge for foreign transactions.
Most major hotels and major department stores will take credit, however its still always good to have cash on hand for other things.
So I do both.
