Can someone please explain how to say in Japanese gI watched a film (or TV programme) called efilm titlefh? This is yet another of the kind of phrases that are quite eeveryday usagef but never feature in any textbooks. Thanks.

A few suggestions 2008/9/26 08:40
gI watched a film (or TV programme) called efilm titlefh?

Polite speech:
- [Title] to iu eiga wo mimashita. (I watched a movie called [title].)
- [Title] to iu namae no eiga wo mimashita. (I watched a movie with the name [title].)

Informal speech:
- [Title] tte iu eiga wo mita yo. (I watched a movie called [title.])
- [Title] tte iu eiga wo mi ni itta yo. (I went to (theater to) watch a movie called [title].)

Thanks for that but... 2008/9/26 20:02
could you please just run the meaning of the 'to iu' & 'tte iu' bits past me? If possible. Thanks.

"... to iu" in this case precisely means "called as..." or "named as..."

"iu" is the verb meaning "to say." And combined with "...to," which is used to mark a quote or a name, it means "called..."

"...tte" is a colloquial version of it.
