Hi I need to get from Shimoda to Hakone Yumoto by train. I will have a Japan Rail pass but I checked on www.hyperdia.com and it tells me I need to go through Tokyo. it will take about 5-6 hours! Surely there is a more direct route?

Shimoda's railway station is called "Izukyu-Shimoda". Unless you enter "Izukyushimoda" into Hyperdia, the results refer to a differen station called Shimoda. Here is the correct route: 1) Take a Odoriko limited express from Shimoda to Odawara 2) Take the Hakone Tozan train from Odawara to Hakone-Yumoto Only the section between Ito and Odawara is covered by the Japan Rail Pass. You can save some money by taking a local train between Shimoda and Ito. You could also take the shinkansen between Atami and Odawara. The map on the following page illustrates the situation: http://www.japan-guide.com/e/e6305.html
