How would I say this in Japanese...?

I recently started talking with a girl from Japan by email, and I want to ask her if she has many friends at school. I have it written as ''中学で友達がたくさんいますか？”(chuugaku de tomodachi ga takusan imasu ka), but I'm not sure if that's worded correctly. Is there a word for just 'school', not necessarily referring to middle school? I've only been studying Japanese for about two months so I don't know much yet ^-^'

It sounds good. As you guessed, it is more normal to just say school.
