Tokyo Metro 2008/10/4 03:36
Hello, I'm trying to decide which to purchase....

I will be in Tokyo for 2days and saw that there is a two day Tokyo Metro pass available at the airport for 980Yen, but then there is a combo Tokyo Metro and Toei subway pass for 1000Yen.

Which makes more sense. We plan on going to Odaiba, Asakusa, Roppongi, Harajuku, Ginza, Mitaka, and Ryogoku.

I'm not quite sure of the differences between the Tokyo Metro and Toei subway lines.

Thanks!

In Tokyo there are 3 major trains:
1. Subways
2. JR trains
3. Private Railway lines

Each is also subdivided, there are two Subway operators:
1. Tokyo Metro
2. Toei

Tokyo Metro operates nine subway lines, and Toei operates 4 subway lines+ they operate the Arakawa Line+the Nippori Toneri Liner (the latter both of which you probalby wont use).

Mitaka is covered by neither (though some Tokyo Metro trains on the Tozai Line continue onto the Chuo Line as JR trains). Mitaka is covered by JR trains.

Again Odaiba is also covered by niether, Odaiba is covered by the category of Private railway lines. Ryogoku is covered by JR and Toei but not Tokyo Metro.

However, Asakusa, Roppongi, Harajuku and Ginza are covered by Tokyo Metro, so if you were to plan those within a two day period plus a few extra rides, the Tokyo Metro Pass (sold from the airport) is not that bad of a deal, but it all depends on how you travel around and where your start point is (eg your hotel). Or if you are ambitious even the one day version of the pass can cover those places in a day.

Otherwise just pay as you go, the combination pass for 1000yen is rarely worth it.

**We plan on going to Odaiba, Asakusa, Roppongi, Harajuku, Ginza, Mitaka, and Ryogoku.**

The two-day Metro Pass for 980 yen is good enough, imho. Odaiba, Ryogoku and Mitaka isn't covered by Tokyo Metro.

Odaiba: Take the Rinkai Line from Shinkiba on Metro Yurakucho Line, and alight at Tokyo Teleport Station, 260 yen each way. Or catch the Yurikamome from Shimbashi to Daiba, 310 yen each way.

Mitaka: Take the Metro Marunouchi Line to Ogikubo, and change to the JR Chuo Line to Mitaka, 7 minutes, 150 yen each way.

Ryogoku: Take the Hibiya Line to Akihabara, change to JR Sobu local train, 4 minutes, 150 yen.

annoying Tokyo subway system 2008/10/4 23:41
13 subway lines serve Tokyo Underground. 9 belong to Tokyo Metro(a company) and 4 belong to Toei(another company).

Buy Tokyo Metro Pass for 980yen for Tokyo Metro lines, and buy single tickets when using JR or Toei lines.

You can buy smart IC card to use JR, Metro and Toei without buying a singles ticket each time.

Tokyo Metro and Toei pass is the least recommendable among these 3 option, as it's hard to make this pass pay off.

Odaiba's day pass? 2008/10/5 12:52
I read somewhere there's a Odaiba day pass where you can use it on the train and even a boat ride? Is it worth it for going Decks, Museum of Emerging Science & Innovation, Megaweb & Palette Town? Where can we buy this ticket?
