Please scroll down the list to "Cultural Activities." As it seems, it's up to one year, basically does not allow work, for those dedicated to researches into Japanese culture. In some other threads, someone mentioned that it would be possible to engage in part-time work (only with permission, for which a separate application process applies). Yet, you need to be able to show that you have enough financial means (without working) to support yourself throughout the studies.

But I believe that when they say "cultural activities," they mean someone who has already had a good track record of having studied the subject to a certain degree, and wants to pursue their studies more academically at a research center/institution in Japan (research under instruction of a professor in graduate school courses, for example), or study one-to-one under a true specialist.

If you enrol in a school to study the subject, I think the status that you would be eligible would be "Pre-college" or something else.
