from Kanazawa to Takayama

We are in Kanazawa and leaving in the morning by hire car to Takayama... can anyone tell us the way to get out of town and the best route to take to get there - no toll roads please, just national highways and main roads... we'd like it to be as scenic as possible of course... and are there any special spots along the way we should look out for?

I recommend the following route: Kanazawa - (prefectural road) - Fukumitsu - (National Route 304) - Gokayama - (National Route 156) - Shirakawago - (Expressway) - Takayama With stops in Gokayama and Shirakawago along the way: http://www.japan-guide.com/e/e5950.htmlI strongly recommend to take the toll expressway between Shirakawago and Takayama. It saves you hours along narrow mountain roads for more time in the Gokayama/Shirakawago area.
