Using irimasu with other verbs 2008/10/17 14:45
Hi there,
I'm trying to figure out how to use irimasu (need) with another verb.
I have used 2 verb combos before such as: watashi wa eiga o mi ni ikimasu (I am going to see a movie)

Is there a way to achieve this with irimasu...for example: I need to eat, I need to go,etc.

what about a 3 verb combo like: I need to go see that movie.

Any suggestions?

Thank you very much.

I think "irimasu" is mostly used for nouns...
With verbs "-nakereba naranai" is mostly used...
Like "eiga wo minakereba naranai" or " eiga wo minakya"

Thank you for your answer.

I do have a followup questions though. How would you about to say: I have to go see the movie.
Would it be something like: eiga o mi ni ikanakereba naranai desu....?

Also, how would conjugate the "nakereba naranai" with both group 1 and 2 verbs?

Thank you.

To say you "need to do something," you can use:
...nakereba narimasen/naranai desu
...nakereba ikemasen/ikenai desu
...nai to narimasen/naranai desu
...nai to ikemasen/ikenai desu.

I'll just take the "...nakereba narimasen" here.

Two irregular verbs: suru/shimasu (to do), kuru/kimasu (to come)
- shinakereba narimasen
- konakereba narimasen

Group 1 (the vowel at the end of the stem changes to "-a")
- yomanakereba narimasen (from yomu/yomimasu - to read)
- nomanakereba narimasen (from nomu/nomimasu - to drink)
- yasumanakereba narimasen (from yasumu/yasumimasu - to rest)
- noranakereba narimasen (from noru/norimasu - to ride)
- kakanakereba narimasen (from kaku/kakimasu - to wrie)
- kikanakereba narimasen (from kiku/kikimasu - to listen to/to ask)

Group 2 (you just take the stem = masu-form verb minus the -masu)
- tabenakereba narimasen (from taberu/tabemasu - to eat)
- minakereba narimasen (from miru/mimasu - to see/watch)

Just to add 2008/10/19 13:03
(Sono) eiga o mi ni ikanakereba naranai desu

This is correct if you want to say "I must (as an obligation) go see that movie."

But if you want to say "I have to..." in the sense of, let's say, "I can't miss that movie" or "I'm definitely going to watch that one" (because someone has seen it and says it was very good), there are other expressions that may be more suitable, such as "Zehi mi ni ikimasu" (Definitely I will go see (it)).

Thank you AK for the detailed explanation.

I guess if I want to express something less obligatory then I can use something like:
eiga o mi ni ikitai desu.("I want to go see the movie")

Thanks again!
