Seems like a really nice place to visit, but according to http://www.japan-guide.com/e/e6040.html it would be closed when we are planning on visiting (early December). What is the nature of the closure? Simple closing of the buildings there (visitors center, food/accomodation), or would transport there also be stopped (no busses, road closed, etc). If public transport is still available, we might be thinking about going there just for a day. Thoughts/advice? Thanks.

What is the nature of the closure?
The 7km road leading there gets closed. It is a typical winter closure. I assume too much snow and not enough demand to justify the effort to keep it open.
I think you can theoretically hike there, but you would obviously need proper equipment for walking through the snow and a knowledge of the area.
