Top5 places in Shizuoka City? 2008/10/22 00:04
Hi everyone.

I am going to Shizuoka next month. Could anyone (who has acutally been there) recommend the "Top5" places to visit within Shizuoka City?

(Temples, Shrines, Gardens and good/interesting places to go shopping is what i am looking for!)

Thank you very much;-)

As Shizuoka city isn't a tourist destination, people might not know. Have you checked the Wikipedia page for the city? Also, in Japan we've only just woken up- give people some time to answer!

Here's the Wiki page- some good info here:

I've been to Shizuoka-shi about five times (friends live there) and to be completely honest, as posted earlier, it's not much of a tourist destination. It's somewhat rural (although the area around the station does have department stores like PARCO and 109) and I haven't found much else.

That being said though, I like the city, good food, that's for sure.

I went to Shizuoka to visit the Tamiya Headquarters, a world leading manufacturing company in model-making. It is not a factory visit but the lobby floor has vast display of all sorts of models including formula cars, military vehicles, aeroplanes, ships and other educational toys. There are separate rooms for different themes including an archive room with the company's products over 30 years ago. The place is opened Mon. to Fri. and admission is free. It's 10 min taxi from JR Shzuoka station.

About 10 min JR from Shizuoka is Shimizu, and connected by 10 min free shuttle bus is S-Pulse Dream Plaza. It is a large shopping mall and entertainment complex. My wife liked the small sushi museum on 1/F with adjacent sushi bars on G/F. There were also a toy museum, a soccer museum and a children playland but we didn't have time to visit all.

Thank you so much everyone. 2008/10/23 20:29
This was exactly the kind of information i was hoping for.

Trenton & Sira: The fact that its not a tourist destination, is exactly the reason why i wanna go there.

Still, its very interesting for me to hear the opinions from people who has actually been there, to get the most out of my limitied time there.

William & TS: Thanks very much for the feedback, sounds very interesting, i will look into that.

Again, thank you everyone :-)

I have one extra question... 2008/10/24 03:36
Could anyone give me directions to Matsuzakaya from Shizuoka Station? (How far is it? is it within walking-distance?)

Thank you all...
