Miso question

My friend and I were having a discussion and he said that on a documentary, he learned that miso soup was traditionally served in square bowls. I studied and lived in Japan for considerable time and never heard of/saw this. I looked online for info, but couldn't find anything. Does anyone have any input so we could settle this disagreement?

Do you mean in the past? I can't answer you there, but it certainly isn't now. I have never seen miso served in anything other than a round bowl.

I think your friend is confusing miso and miso soup. Miso soup was never served in a square bowl (is there such a thing?) But miso used to be sold in a square thing called "masu" the same thing people use to drink sake. Make sense?
