Starting career in Japan 2008/11/26 03:43
Hello, I am a student and am just about to complete my graduation from India. I have been offered a job in a big electronics company at their headquarters in Tokyo. The work is in the field of latest generation of electronics products. They are offering me 245000 Yen per month with additional perks of 980000 Yen per year(82000 Yen p.m). I do not know Japanese but the company is going to teach me the language. Could the seniors please guide as to if this is a good opportunity to start off my career? I am in a dilemma as the work is good but social life I assume is not so.

The salary sounds normal for a new graduate position.

I think its a very good opportunity to work with the latest technologies. Who knows, if later you decide that it doesn't work out, at least you will have good work experience with the latest technologies.

By the way, if you don't mind telling, how did you get the position in India, it doesn't seem that common. Did the company actually go to campus to recruit?

a few other ideas 2008/11/26 14:10
If you are from India it will be hard to bond with Japanese as opposed to say if you found work in America or Australia where it is more multi-cultural and there are more Indians. There are some foreigners however, though few, and Japanese workers themselves are friendly. There are some threads here however that complain that some Japanese workers in general are friendly but "work friendly" and are more like aquaintences and colleagues and it is rather hard to develop more closer relationships as friends. Some however fit in and make good relationships straight away. Only you can tell, since you are your own person.

Socially speaking what are your hobbies? Japan should be able to accomodate with alot of them, and you can over time find the right clubs(cricket might be harder!).

For the job, it sounds ok. The above poster is correct in a sense that you are young, and this would be a great experience for you not only as part of your resume and learning, but for you as a person. Learning Japanese language, a new culture, meeting new people sounds all difficult, and it would be completely different to your social tastes at the moment, but it's worthwhile and not many get this opportunity!

Campus recruitment 2008/11/26 15:26
Thank You! Yes, the recruitment was through campus placements. This company is taking graduates from India for the first time (at least it claims so), so I guess there are not much Indians in the firm at present. Anyways, I am open to learning a new culture and language.
Regarding salary, I have to send money back home. So can you please tell me what is the maximum amount that I can save per month out of my 245,000 Yen (accommodation is provided by the company).
Thanks again!

That sounds reasonable for a new graduate.

There are increasing numbers of Indian people working in IT these days in Japan, with some areas (especially in eastern Tokyo and nearby areas of Chiba) actually having sizeable Indian communities.

There are also Indian restaurants all over Tokyo so you have lots of choice if you want a taste of home.
