Do I need to Pre-book Kaiseki Dinners?

Hi, I will be travelling to Kyoto with my friend soon and I would like to ask whether anyone knows if I need to book a kaiseki dinner in advance or can I just walk in to a restaurant and order a kaiseki meal on the spot?
On a similar note, does anyone have any suggestions on a good kaiseki restaurant in or around the Gion district of Kyoto?
