imagine what you want to do first 2008/12/17 09:10
It absolutely depends on what you do in Japan.

Ok, let me suggest two extreme examples here.
[Plan A]
Arrive at Narita airport, see around some spots within Tokyo city area.
(e.g. Imperial Palace, Tsukiji fish market, Akihabara street, some museums)
and stay one or two days at Sanya area's cheap backpacker inn.
This plan will cost only one or two hundread dollars and flight ticket fee.

[Plan B]
Arrive at Narita airport,
go to Hokkaido area for skiing,
move to Tokyo and look around city area,
move to Hakone and stay at Onsen (hot springs) hotel,
move to Kyoto and look around temples,
etc etc.
With this kind of plan, even 20 thousand dollars in addition to flight ticket fee might be insufficient.

The rank of lodgings, how many areas to look around, and how many days to stay determines the cost.

If it really doesn't matter to you where you go,
stay within Tokyo area and look around wherever you want to.
Not all temples stands in Kyoto, but you can see many temples within Tokyo area.
Although Japan might be notorious for its high prices of commodity,
transportation within Tokyo area won't cost you much,
and there are cheep lodgings and foods available.

So if you can afford the flight ticket, you can carry out a trip to Japan.
No problem at all, so come on and find out if you like Japan :)

It is impossible to answer this question without knowing a lot of other information starting with where you're coming from and how many days you'd like to travel.

All I can say is that right now is NOT the time you want to be visiting Japan due to the ridiculously bad exchange rate.
