i plan to go to hakone from tokyo and stay 1 night and then goto kyoto ..
should i buy a hakone pass ?
should i start my JR pass in the day that i go to kyoto ?

Yes, it pays for itself.

Basically yes, though it depends on how many days you're going stay in Japan.
The Romance Car ride from Shinjuku to Odawara costs only 1,720 yen, while one day portion on the seven-day JR Pass is 4,043 yen.
