It means mushrooms.

If you saw it in email it is probably a garbled pictogram (emoji) typed in a Japanese mobile phone.

Yes, I did see it in an email with a picture of a little bear blowing a kiss and it said "My cute chan".

Why would the mushroom character be paired with that?

As meringue4 probably guessed right, it must have been a cute pictogram that unfortunately got "garbled" into that kanji just by chance.
