January is winter in Japan. Most of the best trekking regions, such as Hokkaido and the Japan Alps will be under deep layers of snow.
Even higher mountains on Kyushu can be snow covered. Nevertheless, I recommend looking into Kyushu and maybe the Nansei Islands (e.g. Yakushima, Okinawa)

Yes. i have tried to explore in the region of Kyushu but either that the tour is expensive ,and not about trekking only, or unadvisible in the winter... but mabye okinawa could be a good idea. Nonetheless trekking in japan for visitors is a poor subject that should be more developed, it is so dissapointing...
thanx any way Ujy
