Rail Passes from Tokyo to Hokkaido 2009/1/5 15:25
I am planning to travel to Hokkaido Free & Easy for 10 days 9 nights in Decf09. I will spend a night at Tokyo before traveling to Hokkaido the next day and will stay at Hokkaido for 6 nights before return to Tokyo. Tentative plan is to take a train from Tokyo to Hokkaido. Is there any Rail Passes I can purchase that enable me to travel from Tokyo to Hokkaido and back to Tokyo during these 10 days? I am traveling with my hubby.

I am interested in taking the Cassiopeia but not very sure on the pricing. Where can I find information on eCassiopeia?f

Hi Uji,

Thanks. I have been traveling to Japan for the past 3 years but every time I get confused by the type of Rail Passes to buy.

For Hokkaido & Higashinihon Pass I understand it provide unlimited travel on local JR trains in the Kanto, Tohoku and Hokkaido regions on five consecutive days. This is a cheap pass for traveler with plenty of time to spare. But the traveling time from Tokyo to Sapporo is very longc.24hours to travel from Tokyo to Sappora.

For Japan Rail Pass, I understand it is recommended if you are planning to visit more than one region. If I were to purchase the Japan Rail Pass, other than allowing me to travel from Tokyo to Hokkaido but does it cover the local JR Trains in Hokkaido? And how long is the journey from Tokyo to Sapporo using this Japan Rail Pass? And if I am interested in taking the eCassiopeiaf (overnite train) where can I find information?

Yes, JR trains nationwide are covered by the Japan Rail Pass.

And how long is the journey from Tokyo to Sapporo using this Japan Rail Pass?

About 11 hours.

And if I am interested in taking the eCassiopeiaf (overnite train) where can I find information?

The Cassiopeia is probably the most luxurious night train in Japan, and for that, it's probably one of the most expensive to ride. Add the additional charge to ride plus the cost of a JR Rail Pass, it is probably cheaper (and a lot faster) to just fly from Tokyo to Hokkaido.
