Extra charge for rapid trains? 2009/1/6 15:08
Hi there,

Just wondering, I have a JR pass that covers the whole of Japan and I have read that when travelling on Rapid JR train services you have to pay an additional fee on top of the JR Pass cost. Is this true? Or does having a JR Pass mean I am covered for all types of JR trains except for the Nozomi?

Thanks!!

Rapid Trains require no additional charge.

Riding Limited Express trains, Shinkansen, or Express trains (in regards to JR Trains) do require an additional fare.

However if you have a JR pass, the JR pass already covers the limited express fee/express fee. So nothing additional needs to be paid. Except for sleeping compartments on sleeping trains.
