Japanese car/license? 2009/1/28 11:20
I was just wondering, do a lot of Japanese people have their liscenses? I know that many take the train and such to work, but I was wondering how many of them actually take their driving test and/or have a car as well. Thank you!!

Definitely it depends a lot on where you live. I live in a prefecture with relatively poor public transportation, which means car ownership is high (the highest in Japan in fact).

Ownership will of course be much lower in the really big cities where the ownership costs (mainly increased by parking fees) make it much less useful or practical to have a car.

Regarding licenses, sitting the classes costs about 300000 yen, which is another deterrent if you won't be using it very much.

Perhaps someone else can post with some harder numbers.
