I had mirin boshi in Japan and it seemed not to have been cooked in any way.I want to make myown and don't understand the many references to grilling.seems as best not the heat.does the processing change in any way depending on cooking or not?

Mirin-boshi is raw seefood marinated in mirin and dried, so it would be best to have they grilled/heated. As far as I know, they are always cooked. If you felt that it was not, perhaps it cooled after it was once cooked.

At a typical Japanese modern household, one would use an oven toaster or fish-grill. Barbeque is also suitable.
