Thank you Uji. The Idea is to rent a car in Takayama, see the area, drive via Matsumoto to the Kiso Valley, see the area and return the car some where I can take a trian to Tokyo. I have 4 nights for that tour, and I thought spending 2 nights in Takayama and 2 nights some where in the Kiso valley. Does this trip make sense ? where do you recommend to return the car and take the train to Tokyo? Thanks Rani M

I recommend to drive from Takayama via Gero to the Kiso Valley (Nakatsugawa), then along the Kiso Valley to Matsumoto and return the car in Matsumoto before taking the train or bus to Tokyo.
