Takayama to Matsumoto takes about two hours.

Matsumoto to Kiso Valley depends where in the valley you go to. The northeastern end of the valley is less than 30 minutes from Matsumoto, while the south western end is over 100 kilometers away.

Thank you Uji.
The Idea is to rent a car in Takayama, see the area, drive via Matsumoto to the Kiso Valley, see the area and return the car some where I can take a trian to Tokyo.
I have 4 nights for that tour, and I thought spending 2 nights in Takayama and 2 nights some where in the Kiso valley. Does this trip make sense ? where do you recommend to return the car and take the train to Tokyo?
Thanks

I recommend to drive from Takayama via Gero to the Kiso Valley (Nakatsugawa), then along the Kiso Valley to Matsumoto and return the car in Matsumoto before taking the train or bus to Tokyo.
