Talent agency form questions.. 2009/2/28 06:28
Okay, so I've taken y'alls advice about red hair being acceptable in Japan in terms of acting/modeling/etc. However, now that I'm filling out some forms, I see that there are questions that I don't know the answers to! Things like "What kind of look do you have?" and "Do you think you could maintain a cute/innocent image?"

Obviously I do know what cute means, but I am not sure if a Japanese person would consider me to be cute. Heck, I don't know if I look sophisticated, youthful, or like an old hag to Asians-- they are all so healthy! lol.

Another thing that's on my mind: when I went to Hiroshima for a homestay during high school, everyone thought I was around 23 years old.. Well, I look very different now, but it is 3 years later. Does that mean I look 26 to Japanese people?

I'm not even 20! Does this mean I don't look youthful?

Sorry, these forms are asking the weirdest questions... I'm not sure if they're wanting me to answer from a Japanese standard or an American one, but I'm guessing Japanese since it is sort of an Asian company =P

Okay so to make this more organized for you guys (sorry!)
Answers to the following questions would be gratefully appreciated from a Japanese perspective! :

1. Do I look youthful?
2. How old do I look (I am 169.5 cm tall)?
3. Do I look cute or innocent?
4. How would you describe my 'look'?
5. Do I have 'excessive freckling/age spots'? (I do have freckles on my face and shoulders, but I wouldn't call them excessive)
6. Do I have an unattractive amount of freckles?
7. The agencies asked for a picture of myself with no makeup on (see attached photo), but I am not sure if this picture is too blurry. What do you think?
8. Am I not going to make it if I don't look good in a bikini? All of these agencies want at least one bikini shot and I'm kind of modest =(. I mean I do look 'good' in a bikini, but I'm very very very very VERY VERY white and don't like to wear bikinis because I'm always told I look like a vampire..

Okay, here's the picture. I'm sorry the quality is so poor-- I'm not a photography whiz kid. And my skin looks yellow there, but it's actually incredibly white (I seriously cannot stress to you how white it is.). One more thing-- I do have a shirt on in this photo. You can see the material near my arm

Thank you everyone. I might not actually submit the applications since I'm not very confident about this whole thing, but your answers will give me a much better idea of how these people will see me! And if my looks don't make it for me, hopefully my Japanese language abilities can someday!

(oh btw.. In case if I'm not cute... Do I HAVE to be? It seems like all of these places only want cute)

1. Do I look youthful?
YES
2. How old do I look (I am 169.5 cm tall)?
21 or 22
3. Do I look cute or innocent?
YES
4. How would you describe my 'look'?
A young Kisten Dunst
5. Do I have 'excessive freckling/age spots'? (I do have freckles on my face and shoulders, but I wouldn't call them excessive)
Not for a redhead
6. Do I have an unattractive amount of freckles?
No
7. The agencies asked for a picture of myself with no makeup on (see attached photo), but I am not sure if this picture is too blurry. What do you think?
I think you are pretty, but I would get a better photo.

I'm sure you'll look good in a bikini. Lose the modesty if you are going to be a model or in show business.

Japanese people tend to be not good at judging the age of non-Japanese and usually guess high- I bet you can't judge the age of a Japanese person that accurately either. Don't worry about it if you are under 20.

Tans are not fashionable in Japan, so the paler the better. I agree with the above that you will need to lose that modesty if you want to make modelling your career.

The request for a "cute or innocent" look makes me suspect that they are involved in "gravure modelling"- are you familiar with what that involves and happy to do it?

Thank you for your responses! Very helpful and encouraging. When I said that I was modest, I meant about being so white. But if Asians generally view paler as better, I have nothing to really be modest about!

And you are right, I am horrible at guessing Japanese ages! Hopefully me looking a little older will help me get into izakaya and the like when I visit =P hahaha.. Oh how I wish my 20th birthday were before my trip =(

I'm 19 btw.

That gravure modeling stuff doesn't look very appealing... Is that the only kind of work I could do? This girl I know, Emily, got into that and her DVD kind of mimics soft core porn. I don't want that, so is there any way of avoiding it?

Just say "no thanks" and look elsewhere.
