Just wondering if anyone can help me with the meaning of 婚姻の方式。 It is written on the family register when a Japanese national is married to a non-Japanese. Does this mean under what law the couple were married? Or perhaps where the marriage was first registered?
Next to 婚姻の方式 is the country name, so perhaps Marriage Formalities would be suitable. And instead of just the country name, perhaps "In accordance with UK/USA/Australian law" or something like that. Anyone know what is generally used?

I don't know what the really generally used term is, but sure enough, I just checked a copy of my family register, and I suppose if I am translating it, I would do that as: Married under: UK/US/Australia law or Married: In accordance with UK/US/Australia law. ...because when they say "houshiki," in this context they really mean the law. http://info.pref.fukui.jp/kokusai/tagengo/html_e/konnat...This webpage (of one of municipal government) uses the word "procedures." Try searching with "marriage" on maybe Embassy of Japan websites?
