Traveling to Kobe-what to do? 2009/4/7 09:09
My husband and I are traveling to Kobe for a conference in May. This is our first time in any part of Asia and we are very excited, but have no idea what to do while we are there! We are staying for 7 nights and will have plenty time outside of the conference for sight seeing and dining. I would love to receive advice on where to go and what to see while we are there. We are very interested in really getting to see what the country is like and the culture there. Any help is greatly appreciated!

If you are going to be in that area, you can also easily travel to Kyoto (full of temples and gardens - traditional), Himeji (a beautiful castle), and Osaka (more on the modern side). Have fun!

Kyoto, Nara and Himeji are Japan's top tourist attractions accessible from Kobe as 1 daytrip, while you can see modern part of Japan in Osaka.

Nada district of Kobe is Japan's No1 alchole producer and the nightview from Mt.Maya in Kobe is said to be the most beautifull all over the country.

Thanks for the suggestions! I am going to be checking those websites and locations here in the next few days so I imagine there will be a few more questions! But right now I was wanting to ask if anyone knows if there is any beach life in Kobe? I know we are staying right off the ocean but I can't tell if there are beaches around or if people even swim in the ocean.

Not in central Kobe, but there are some beaches in the western part of Kobe city, Suma beach in Suma-ku, and there is an aquarium there as well. But I don't think the beaches will be open to swimming yet in May - too cold anyway. I think the "beach opening" will be in early July maybe?

You can swim in the sea at the beach in SUMA/MAIKO area in Kobe, under the longest suspension bridge in the world.
