Usuki and Beppu

I am wondering if it is worth visiting the stone Buddhas in Usuki and the hells in Beppu as a day trip from Fukuoka?
Can you use the JR pass on the trains from Fukuoka to Beppu and Usuki?
Also, which bus do you take from Usuki station to the Buddhas? Does it run regularly?

Personally I love it there. If you like buddhism and its historical value you will be facinated by the place.
There is a bus tour there that leaves every hour or so from JR usuki station. just get the schedule when you arrived at the station.
everything closes very early in usuki so you will probably be out there by 5 or 6 pm
