itinerary advice -- extra day 2009/5/18 03:54
We need a bit of advice about what to do with one day in Japan

We'll be leaving the Kyoto area on Friday and would like to be back in Tokyo Saturday night, but we don't know what to do in between. Ideally, would love to do something that's a little more quiet or serene, possibly including a stay at a ryokan/onsen.

Here's the catch, though -- two of the people we're travelling with are observant Jews and can't drive, spend money, or use electricity from sundown on friday to sundown on saturday (around 8pm), so it'd have to be in an area that's at least somewhat walkable/hikeable.

Some ideas that came to mind include:
Hakone area (not sure where to stay though)
Kanazawa (may be too difficult to get back to Tokyo on sat night)
Nikko (pretty far trip from Kyoto)
Magome/Tsumago

Would love other ideas if people have them!

Maybe Kamakura 2009/5/18 12:05
I personally haven't stayed in a Ryokan, or been to Hakone, but that sounds a good option. Nikko and Kanazawa would be too rushed in your time frame. But Kamakura is very close to Tokyo, has a lot to see, lots of walking and picnic opportunities (so stock up the night before at a convenience store) and you should be able to find a ryokan there..not sure though. It would certainly be very close for an evening train trip to central Tokyo

some idea 2009/5/18 12:11
D Hammer,

To get to Tokyo on Saturday night(from 8pm?), you have to be somewhat close to Tokyo. Kanazawa & Magome/Tsumago are not realistic options.

My suggestions are Atami or Yokohama.
