Cost 2009/5/19 20:24
Hi, I don't know where are you from, but I've been in Japan for 17 days and I've spent more or less 1600/1700 € including the Japan rail pass for 14 days, hotels, meals, entrace tickets to musem/temples/shrines, few souvenirs, and all the things not included in the JR pass, such as bus tickets, non-JR trains, taxi and so on. In 1500€ are not included the plane tickets. Notice that I've been in Japan during the golden week, so the room rate was more expensive.
Hope it can help you... have a nice trip!

Cheap Meals 2009/5/20 03:27
Japan can be cheap if you are careful. 7 Eleven and other combini sell onigirii (rice balls) for about 150 yen. You can also get cheap udon (noodles) for about 300 yen at restaurants where you have to stand instead of sit. You can also get drinks at 100 yen shops instead of paying 150 yen in a vending machine. Also if you can boil water in your room you can then drink that water instead of bottle water or soft drinks. In the larger cities office building have cheap restaurants in their basements. The point is to be careful and look around. Also check out Japan Youth Hostel http://www.jyh.or.jp/english/index.html.
