Prepaid Phones at Narita 2009/5/31 06:07
Hi. In about a week, I will be leaving for Japan and staying for two months. I would like to buy a prepaid cellphone to use while I am there. One of my friends suggested that it may be easiest to obtain/buy one at the airport. I'm thinking about buying one from Softbank, and I was wondering if anyone has obtained a prepaid cellphone at the Narita airport and approximately how the much a typical phone costs in yen(disregarding the phone card). Thank you in advance for any answers and/or suggestions!

You need a Japanese address 2009/6/3 04:46
To purchase a prepaid phone in Japan, you need either an alien registration and Japanese address, or a Japanese person to act as guarantor. Otherwise, you have to rent the prepaid phones.

Softbank will sell prepaid phones to visitors, requiring only a passport and an address (hotels seem to be acceptable). It depends on which store you ask at, with Roppongi and Shibuya confirmed to sell them to travellers.

Narita Softbank also sells prepaids, however the ones they sell may not be the same as the domestic models. When was last there the models seemed aimed at Japanese travelling overseas and also looked more expensive than their domestic prepaids.
