It is a fish cake named Naruto, named after the sea straight between Shikoku and Awaji Island in Naruto City, where whirlpools (red swirly lines) can be observed. Here is some general information on fish cakes of which the naruto fish cake is just one of many varieties: http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Kamaboko

I said it has nothing to do with the anime character because the kamaboko called "naruto" comes first, not the other way round. ;)
Anime character Naruto may have semething to do with naruto, but the naruto kamaboko was named after the great whirl. That's all.

I realized that's what you meant ;)
Just wanted to point out that they do have a relation, but as you mentioned either the food inspired the anime and not the other way around, or they are both named after the whirlpools.
