Where are these places ? 2009/6/5 21:03
Where exactly is Oigami onsen ? Heard it's beautiful around the fall, is that best time to visit ? Any recommendations on a ryokan with nice rotenburo with good views ?
Where's shakotan coast and is there much to do/see there ? What's the major town on that coast ?

Oigami Onsen is about 30 minutes outside of central Numata City in Gunma Prefecture:

Shakotan is the peninsula west of Sapporo. Otaru is located at the entrance to the peninsula. Yoichi is the major town on the peninsula itself. The coastal scenery is the main attraction.

I went to Oigami onsen in March this year- it was a beautiful setting, and the Fukiware-no-taki waterfall was quite impressive.

I won't recommend the onsen hotel I stayed at though (I'm afraid the name escapes me now- possibly Yamashita ryokan) because it was somewhat run down and there was actually slime on the bottom of the indoor bath so it was obviously hardly ever cleaned properly. The view from the rotenburo wasn't particularly impressive either.

Sira, can you see your ryokan from the links below so we could avoid it as we are definitely including Oigami+Fujiware falls in our autumn trip.

Uji: would you say mid or end November would be best for the autumn colours in Oigami ?

I think late October to early November is the best timing for the area around Oigami Onsen.

It was in the third link, it was the Hotel Yamaguchi-ya (ホテル山口屋) that we stayed in- not the similarly named Shisuitei Yamaguchi which is a bit up the road and actually comes highly recommended by a friend of mine.

The autumn leaves are at their peak in Tokyo in mid to late November so it will definitely be earlier than that in the mountains in Gunma.
