what is the difference between these two symbols if anyone knows, i appreciate it.
家族 かぞく kazoku

家 means house/home. 族 means brood (a group having a common nature or origin). Put them together and you have family.

家族 = Kanji (what you would usually see in writing) かぞく = Kana (specifically, Hiragana - used in children's books, for pronunciation, etc.) Kazoku = Romaji (used for learning Japanese by textbooks and such because it isn't Japanese characters)
