JR Rail Pass & reservation seats

I travel with a JR Rail Pass. Have I to reserve seats in Shinkansen trains or can I go and travel with next train, I can catch ?
My daily schedule is not fixed, so I do not know in advance, which time I can catch a train.

All shinkansen (except the hayate and komachi trains on the Tohoku Shinkansen) have unreserved seats, which can be used without a seat reservation. So, you can just board them with the rail pass and try to find seats in the unreserved cars. Nozomi trains cannot be used by Japan Rail Pass holders.
There is a risk that all seats in the unreserved cars might be taken on busy days or during busy hours. In that case, you will have to stand, at least for part of the journey.
