Hi, I would like to visit the Izu Peninsula. Are there western style hotels, or hotels with some western rooms, right on the coast? Preferably upmarket ones. Looking at nice rocky coastline. Thanks.

Thanks Uji. Is it easy to drive around the region - are street signs in English? Also, is it easy to rent bicycles for daily exploration?

Is it easy to drive around the region - are street signs in English?
It is easy to drive along the major roads, but on minor roads many signs might be in Japanese only. There are some spectacular roads along the southern, southwestern and western coasts of the peninsula, and some nice toll-roads along the mountain ridges in the interior of the peninsula. Some can be quite curvy, but an experienced driver should have no problems. Driving in Japan is on the left. Special concentration is required if you are not used to that.
Also, is it easy to rent bicycles for daily exploration?
There seem to be some rental places, but frankly, it might not be so easy to find them unless you do research in advance.

Thanks for the suggestions. Another question about driving - are GPS systems available in English at car rental companies? Would they be easy to use in Japan?

they are generally only available in Japanese. They are generally simple to figure out by trial and error. The easiest is to search for destinations by phone number.
