changing tourist visa to dependent visa 2009/7/3 20:35
I am a full time student in Japan, My fiancée is coming to japan under tourist visa for 3 month. If we marry at the home consulate office in Tokyo, and get a marriage certificate, is it gonna be possible to change her status at the immigration office in Tokyo. I would be more than happy if someone could post a detailed answer. Tnx in advance

Dependent visa 2009/7/4 10:17
Jamakarim,

As explained on the official immigration website, it depends on your own visa status.

If you have a Cultural Activities or College Student visa, then your fiancee can obtain a Dependent visa.

Incidentally, you get married at your local ward office, not a consulate.

whats the procedure like? 2009/7/5 11:54
Tnx Dave for your reply. I am a mater's student and my passport says "college student" category. As I mentioned she is going to enter Japan on a tourist visa for 3 months and we r planning to marry each other then apply at the Immigration for "dependent". In this case, if this is possible to change from tourist to dependent, then will that be change of status or acquiring a new dependent visa at the immigration. Does the immigration office issue visas as well? I googled but could not find any elaborate links on these procedures. Has anybody faced similar case in japan. Tnx in advance.

Dependent visa 2009/7/5 13:36
I have to disagree with Dave, getting a visa is not "a right" so being married with someone who have one does absolutely not give you automatically a visa. Some visas holders are not qualified to get a dependent visa for their husband/wife, students visa holders are one of those. You are free to call the immigration office on monday morning but I know for sure that the dependent visa is only for those who have a visa like for example "Specialist in Humanities" or ""Intra-company Transferee".
The original visa holder is supposed to support financially the personn he/she is sponsoring for dependent visa and you can not seriously say that a student with a part-time job and studies can support all the spendings of a married couple.

Banana Republic,

being married with someone who have one does absolutely not give you automatically a visa

Yes, that is basically what I said in my reply.

I know for sure that the dependent visa is only for those who have a visa like for example "Specialist in Humanities" or ""Intra-company Transferee".

You sound very certain, but doesn't the official Ministry of Foreign Affairs website say that a Dependent visa is available to the spouse of someone with a Cultural Activities or College Student status of residence?
