12day osaka/toyko/osaka itinerary

This will be our first trip to Japan. We arrive 1st Dec and leave via Osaka on the 12th Dec. We intend to buy a7day JR pass. What other transport pass shd we complement it with? Any recomendation on accommodations will also be appreciated.

A 7-day Japan Rail Pass pays off only if you complete the round trip to Tokyo within 7 days.
If you just see the cities, then I recommend to use a prepaid card for the rest, e.g. Icoca and Kansai Surutto Card for Osaka and possibly a Suica card for non-JR transportation in the Tokyo area if you stay there for multiple days.
If you make some longer side trip (e.g. Himeji or Koyasan), some other passes, such as a Kansai Thru Pass or Koyasan Free Servic could become an attractive option.
