Holiday in Japan over New Year

Hi, I am thinking of visiting Japan between 25 Dec 2009 and 2 Jan 2010.
Am planning to visit Nagoya, Osaka and Kyoto. Was wondering if all the shops will shut down on 31 Dec and 1 Jan? I know its Japanese New Year during that time. Kindly advise.
Thanks!
Regards, Ezencia

Most shops open on December 31, but are closed on January 1. But some shops are also open on January 1.

Thanks Uji-san. May I know if it is difficult to travel during this period? I am intending to arrive in Nagoya on 31 Dec from Kyoto and leave Nagoya on Jan 2 to the airport.

Very, very few shops are open on Dec. 1, even in Tokyo. And many shops close early on Dec. 31. Except for convenience stores. I think you should plan on some sightseeing instead. The temples will be lively.
