New Years in Japan 2009/8/18 06:49
What has the situation been like the last couple of years in Japan on New Years? Are there more and more stores/restaurants staying open from the 1st through the 3rd now? Are the malls in Odaiba open? Which day do most stores have their fukubukuro on?

The trend is clearly in the direction of more shops being open on January 1, especially the big malls and shopping centers. At least in the Kanto Region around Tokyo. I am not sure about the situation in other regions of Japan, although I suspect it is similar.

On January 2 and 3, most shops are traditionally open. Now and before.

Are the malls in Odaiba open?

Yes.

Which day do most stores have their fukubukuro on?

I think it is the first day they are open, which traditionally is January 2. But with more and more shops open on January 1, I imagine them being offered on January 1.

Shopping on New Year's Day in Japan is like shopping on Christmas Day in your town.
