Hi, can anyone tell me where is the best location to get a photo of shinkansen passing by Fuji San? or any other great locations to see shinkansen cutting through the city etc? anywhere but from a station platform...
thanks in advance!

Go to Yahoo groups and in the 'finance' groups there is one called jtrains of which I am a member. http://finance.groups.yahoo.com/group/jtrains/ The boys there will give you some detailed information. Unfortunately my visits to Japan do not allow me the time it takes to go to good trackside locations and I rely on platforms for most photographs. I might add that Fuji is very much a hit and miss location according to the cloud mass that frequently obscures it. Here is an excerpt from the group discussion :- "the nearest station is Fujikawa. It is too far from Shinkanbara. Even from Fujikawa, it is a little bit hard by walking to get to the photographing points on the bank or riverbed of the Fuji river. It is more than 2 km. I recommend that you rent a car (hire a car?) at Shinkansen Fuji station to maintain flexibility in your activity. The area is one of my most favorite photographing spots, and I have tried to photograph trains with Mt. Fuji in the background many times from there. Another problem on photographing Mt. Fuji is weather. Mt. Fuji is likely to be hidden in cloud. It would be less than 50 percent in the rate to get a clear view of Mt.Fuji around there." Chris, If you want to walk to the spot for that classic shot with Fuji in the background, Chris Hood gives detailed directions in his article here... http://www.hood-online.co.uk/publications/Fuji.pdfHe has also written other articles on how to get to other famous viewpoints. http://www.hood-online.co.uk/publications/In central Tokyo, views of the shinkansen winding through Shimbashi and Yurakucho can be quite artistic. Good vantage points are the Kotsukaikan Building roof (east side of Yurakucho station), the viewing gallery at top of the International Forum building (west side of Yurakucho station), and the observation floor at the top of the World Trade Center building next to Hamamatsucho station.

Elusive Mount Fuji

Yep, I would definitely second what Rod says... the chances of seeing picture postcard views of Mount Fuji are really quite rare, although your chances are higher in winter.

Another factor to consider is the snow level of Mount Fuji. Most people agree that the mountain looks most beautiful when only its upper 20-50 percent are snow covered. I think that around November and March to mid May, it usually looks very good. But even during most of the winter, the mountain often remains only about 50% covered, except after days with heavy snowfall into the lower elevations. Another factor is the vegetation. I recommend to avoid December to April, because the vegetation around the shinkansen tracks is unpleasantly yellow or barren during that time of the year, as seen on the following photo: http://www.japan-guide.com/g4/2019_01.jpgI imagine early May to be quite attractive. Alternatively, I have seen photos that, in addition to Mount Fuji and a shinkansen train, also include a cherry tree in bloom That would be in early April.
