Getting from Narita to Ikebukuro 2009/8/26 14:47
My sister and I will be travelling with 1 suitcase each and 1 carry on bag each from Australia in October. We are staying at Sakura hotel in Ikebukuro. Please can you tell us the cheapest/easiest way to get to Ikebukuro from Narita ap. Please provide fares if possible and station ID.

Also, if you could advise on using the subway for travel, or is it easiest/cheapest to use the JR line (and buy a 2-day pass), etc for travel to sights, shopping, Disneyland etc.
Thanks for your help!

Louise, the cheapest is to take a Keisei Ltd Express from the airport to Nippori
Y1000 and about 70'-72'
At Nippori you take a Yamanote Loop line train to Ikebukuro
Y160 and 12'
NOTE that the Yamanote Loop runs in BOTH directions. You take the one bound for Ikebukuro and Shinjuku NOT Ueno and Tokyo although that will get you there at the same price but will take a lot longer.
For movement around Tokyo I recommend a SUICA card. Buy it at the JR counter at Narita airport right opposite the Keisei counter on the railway level. You can actually use it on the Keisei train and it will make the transfer at Nippori much easier. In fact it will make travelling everywhere in Tokyo much easier because you will never have to figure out the cost of a ticket in advance. Just keep it charged up on the many SUICA machines at the stations. When you fly out they will refund any unused credit and give back a fair bit of the Y5000 deposit.
I know you asked for the cheapest but at Narita you might be feeling a bit like "I just need to get to the hotel" and the first available train is the Keisei Skyliner. For an extra Y920 they give you a reserved seat and it takes about 15' less in running time and negates any extra waiting time.

The Suica deposit is 500 yen, not 5000 yen.

JR-East and Keisei each have two stations in the airport: Narita Airport Station and Airport Terminal 2 Station. Check which terminal (1 or 2) your flight is going to use.

Narita Express

- Showing your non-Japanese Passport at a JR-East ticket counter in the airport, you can get a Suica & N'EX package at 3,500 yen. (1,500 yen for a discount ticket, 1,500 yen for e-money of a Suica card, 500 yen as a deposit on the card. You can try to refund the Suica card's e-money, only at a JR-East counter.)
Considering your baggage, I suppose the best way is to take a Narita Express [N'EX] train with the discount ticket to Ikebukuro Sta., making no transfer at any station, unless you become free to travel (after immigration procedures) too late for the last N'EX train departing from the airport around 21:45.
- The required time from the airport to Ikebukuro Sta. is about 1 hour 25 minutes.
- N'EX trains require seat reservation; all the seats are non-smoking seats.
- - JR-East Travel Service Center

When the Center is closed, find a ticket office nearby with this logo.

Station to hotel

- After getting off your N'EX train at Ikebukuro Sta., you can get out through Central 1 Ticket gate, turn left and advance to West Exit. The route from West Exit is indicated in this page, but probably you'd better take a taxi if your baggage is to heavy.
