ikimasu versus sore wa ikimasen ne 2009/10/13 14:47
Is it true that ''Sore wa ikimasen ne'' means, ''That's unfortunate''?

I'm a little confused because I thought ikimasen was the negative form of ikimasu as in ''Hanaya ni ikimasu'' ''I'm going to the Flower shop.''

Please help. Thank you.

I think what you heard must be "Sore wa ikemasen ne" (Please note the spelling.)

That would mean "That's too bad," for example if you hear that someone has a bad cold, you might say that.

You are absolutely right! 2009/10/13 19:10
Hi, jezzro.

''Ikimasen'' is the negative form of ''Ikimasu''.
That's correct!

Is it true that ''Sore wa ikimasen ne'' means, ''That's unfortunate''?
This is wrong.

If you say that '' Sore wa ikemasen ne'' could be means '' That's unfortunate.''
You can use '' Sore wa ikemasen ne'' when you are moved with sympathy to someone or something.

For example:
A)I have got a cold.
* Kaze wo hiite shimaimasita.
B)Oh, I am sorry.
*Sore wa ikemasen ne.(sympathy)

And another way to use ''Sore wa ikemasen ne''.'' is related to the words like Pity, Shame, and so on.But not express your strong feeling,I think.

Jyaa ne! ( See you!)
