Ad translation 2009/10/18 23:07
While in Tokyo, I saw a Wonda coffee ad with this text:

みんなの朝に,「あはよございます」の缶コーヒー。

The best I can come up with for a translation is:

Morning everyone, "Oh it is possible" coffee cans.

My problem is not so much translating the Japanese into English. It's translating the translation.

geogeek1,

There's a typo in there which is screwing up your online translator results...
It should be:
みんなの朝に,「おはよございます」の缶コーヒー

Thanks Dave, you're right. A little dyslexia on my part. I get "ohayogozaimasu" in romaji, which translates to "you will find it". I guess I was confused with the similarity to "ohayougozaimasu" "Good Morning".

So my confusion is in the translation of "ohayogozaimasu" which could be either

1. Everyone's morning, "Good Morning" coffee in cans.

or 2. Everyone's morning, "You will find it" in coffee cans.

I like 1. better. Comments?

You can't go literal with ads and things like that - you need to be a bit more creative to get the *message* across that the original ad wants to convey.

It's a bit more like:
- A can of coffee that greets everyone bright and early with "Good morning!"

The "に" in "みんなの朝に" (to me) implies that you bring/delivers that "good morning!" greeting TO everyone (as they wake up for the day), so implying ensuring a good start in the morning to everyone.

You provided me with what I was looking for in the translation, the actual meaning. As I said in my original post, the literal translation is usually not all that hard, it's translating the translation that is my big stumbling block.

I appreciate you giving me the time.

Thanks, again.

Maybe something like:

- Deliverying in a can a cheerful "Good morning!" to everyone. Wonda coffee.

The morning-only coffee can 2009/10/19 20:39
みんなの朝に、「おはようございます」の缶コーヒー。

Literally meaning, "To everyone's morning, the coffee can of a 'good morning'"

In other words, "It's another day, everyone. A good morning can of coffee to you."
