Sumo tournament in Fukuoka

We are travelling to Japan in a week's time and plan on heading down to Fukuoka to see the sumo tournament. Do we need to book tickets ahead of time or can we get them on the day we wish to visit?
Do we need to make sure we line up for tickets early so we don't miss out? We are going to be there half way through the tournament.
Thanks

If you visit on a weekday (as opposed to weekends and national holidays) and do not mind the higher up seats, you can usually get them on the day of the tournament.
Weekends and national holidays and the better seats, however, usually sell out in advance, and advance reservations are highly recommended.

Hi Uji, Thanks for your response. Is advanced booking suggested even if we just want the general admission seating?

If you can make advance reservations, I recommend to do so. As I wrote above, they are usually necessary on weekends and national holidays, but usually not during the week.
