what is hurigana? 2009/11/5 17:36
I was trying to contact this one japanese company to ask a question...and for some reason it asked for something called Hurigana and then said "sei" and "may". I am a bit confused since I have never heard of hurigana or how this is used for contacting companies...can someone explained?

Furigana 2009/11/5 19:26
Brio,

The "hurigana" you are hearing is "furigana", the reading (pronunciation) of Japanese kanji words or names using kana.
See: http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Furigana

"Sei" means family name.
"Mei" means given name.

Furigana can be used for Romaji as well- if a company wants my name and then asks for furigana, I write my name in Romaji and then use katakana for the furigana- quite standard.
