Traveling around Minami Alps, Yamanashi

I've been asked to move to Minami Alps, Yamanashi to work. I currently live in Chiba and have never even visited that area.
How difficult is it to travel around Minami Alps?
I looked online and didn't find any train or bus information. Would I need a car?

Yamanashi is a prefecture. There are both, large urban areas like Kofu and very remote rural areas. And everything in between. But a car is useful even in the largest city of Kofu.
