New Year Coutdown 2009/12/6 12:58
Hi,

As we'll be in Tokyo on New Year's Eve, we are wondering where we should go for countdown.

We understand that there'll be a relatively big celebration at Zojoji Temple with a fair and the releasing of eco-friendly balloons at midnight. Other than that, is there other venues for countdown where they might have fireworks and partying?

Thanks.

New Year's Eve in Japan is not the big party night it is in other countries I'm afraid- it's more like Christmas, where most people stay home with their families. Fireworks, no, they are a summer thing here. Possibly at Disneyland, but that's just a guess. There will be people visiting shrines at midnight all over the city, but that is a fairly quiet event, although the atmosphere is good.

Partying- there will be plenty of younger people partying at bars and nightclubs in areas like Shibuya and Roppongi, but not outdoors. If you go to bars and clubs expect them to be very packed.
