It depends. The u800 may be able to operate on Ntt and Softbank's networks, however it depends on how you plan to get service. If you will be internationally roaming with your home carrier then you should check to see if they have a service agreement with a carrier in Japan. If you wish to use it with a rental sim card, you may be able to assuming the phone is unlocked. Softbank rents sim cards at Narita airport and at some of their other locations. Those are pretty much your options if you are a traveller, and other options become available if you are a resident.
